But before your feet leave land, there are a few things you need to do to ensure that your cruise experience is safe and fun.

  1. Do a background check. Make sure you know what you’re getting into, check up on the reports of the cruise line and bring them along on the cruise. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention releases cruise line reports which grades them on sanitation. Also check travel blogs and websites for insider information.
  2. Take care your health. Take precautions every step of the way. Pack a first aid kit with waterproof bandages and extra medications, especially those that prevent seasickness. You can find brands of over-the-counter anti-seasickness medication at local stores as well as anti-seasickness wristbands.
  3. Protect your essentials. Keep important documents like birth certificates, passports and tickets in a secure place while aboard. Put all of the documents in a Ziploc bag to keep the materials together and safe from water. Plastic or reusable, waterproof bags can come in handy during other cruise activities. It will keep your materials (books, cameras, and extra clothes) safe while at the pool.
  4. Be equipped for emergencies. Make sure that you and your family are familiar with the safety drills and rules on the cruise, consider getting travel insurance and become familiar with the laws of the country you’ll make port in.
