Whether you see brown bears fishing for salmon, belugas swimming beneath the surface or just the gentle flow of the water, the Naknek River is a great place to marvel at nature.

The 35-mile long Naknek empties into Bristol Bay and is of one of the most productive salmon producing watersheds on Earth. In spring, after the ice breaks, keep an eye out for beluga whales chasing small fish as well as migrating swans, geese, and ducks. Year-round, look for awe-inspiring sunrises and sunsets.

Katmai National Park and Preserve was established to protect and study the active volcanic landscape surrounding the Valley of the Ten Thousand Smokes. This vast and pristine wilderness is a critical habitat for brown bears and salmon and provides citizens and scientists alike the opportunity to explore its dynamic arctic ecosystems.
