Swimming with Orcas in New Zealand

by Andrea Greengard

Check out this amazing, unexpected experience that happened to Toby Ploeg while swimming in New Zealand. We bet he was glad his friend brought his underwater camera! In Toby’s words, it was “Totally unexpected, and the most amazing experience of my life!”

While taking a dip in the shallow waters off the coast of New Zealand, he and his friends encounter a group of killer whales (orcas). The whales seem as excited and interested in the people as the people are to them. Besides Toby and his friends excited voices , the background audio of this video is what is probably the most appropriate song for this type of encounter, Michael Jackson’s “Will You Be There For Me”, from the soundtrack of “Free Willy”.

What an incredible experience! It’s worth mentioning that although orcas are nicknamed “killer whales”, no person has ever been injured by an orca in the wild.
