It is the summer home to the largest colony of bats in the world. An estimated 20 million Mexican free-tailed bats roost in the cave from March to October.
It’s important to remember that Mexican free-tailed bats are an essential predator of corn earworm moths and other crop pest. The Bracken bat colony alone is estimated to consume over 100 tons of these moths every summer night.
