In case you didn’t know, there are 2 kinds of buttons – flat buttons and shank buttons. Because of this, the method you use to sew a button will depend on what type of button you have. Don’t feel bad if you didn’t know that – this is a sewing for beginners article.

First determine which type of button you have:

  • The most common type of button is a flat button. It has 2 or 4 holes. As the name suggests, the buttons are flat with no loop protruding out of the back. The holes will go right through the button from the top to the bottom.
  • Shank buttons have no holes on the top but instead, have the holes through an extra barrel-shaped piece at the back of the button.
