Today, on Purple Heart Day, let’s celebrate and take care of our heroes.
History of the Purple Heart
On August 7, 1782, George Washington created the “Badge for Military Merit,” a decoration consisting of a purple silk and silver binding. Today, the new Purple Heart honors President Washington with his picture and coat of arms. The Order of the Purple Heart was created in 1932. It’s the oldest American military decoration for military merit. This award honors members of the United States armed forces who have been killed or wounded in action or soldiers who were prisoners of war.
