Lots of kids and young adults have low self-esteem, and young girls are especially susceptible to low confidence. According to a study funded by the Dove Self-Esteem Fund, seven in ten girls believe that they do not measure up in some way.

It’s not just the kids that need a confidence boost. According to a study published by the American Psychological Association (APA), self-esteem rises during adulthood, but it peaks at age 60. After age 60 the participants’ confidence declined especially among those with poor health conditions and lower incomes.

  • Indulge in small pleasures. It’s the little things that make life exciting, like a surprise visit from a friend or a free doughnut. Little things can also help boost your confidence. Try getting a new bottle of perfume, wearing your favorite outfit, or keeping positive, mood-boosting quotes around your mirror. Also try pampering yourself with massages, relaxing bath bombs, or a delicious treat. When you care for yourself you boost your confidence. 
  • Challenge yourself. Whether it’s something simple like a new haircut or something bigger like a new hobby or travel adventure, challenging yourself and pushing yourself to new limits can boost your self-esteem. When you achieve your new goals you expand your knowledge and reap new life experiences. These benefits can do wonders for your confidence.
  • Look to a role model. From your mother to your favorite international superstar, everyone needs a personal hero. Looking to their lives, the struggles that they have overcome, and the strategies they used to achieve success can give you inspiration and boost your confidence. Read biographies about your heroes and write down key points from their life that you can implement in your own life.
  • Invest in your relationships. The previously mentioned APA study found that people who have supportive relationships have higher self-esteem. Seeing yourself through the eyes of loved ones can boost your confidence. So try to spend more time with your friends and loved ones.
