A Mindfulness Makeover

Sometimes we all need a mindfulness makeover. Being mindful means trying to engage your attention and keep it in the present moment. Mindfulness shouldn’t only be reserved for the time when you are practising meditation.  If you apply these qualities to your day-to-day life, it can make your home a place of harmony and happiness.

Living in a more mindful home doesn’t mean you have to turn it into a monastery. After all, you live and work in the world. Instead, what you can do is to take elements of mindfulness and apply them to your home life.

Here are some easy examples of things to help you with a mindfulness makeover:

  1. CREATE A QUIET SPACE.
While, in an ideal world, you should be able to practise mindfulness in any location, having a quiet meditation space does have its advantages. Whether you can dedicate a whole room or simply part of a room to meditation, make sure you create a space that is supportive of your aim. This will make your mindfulness makeover much more successful!
  2. CLEAR THE CLUTTER.
Your home should be full of useful things that are easily accessible from their place of storage.  However, there are often many things that have outlived their usefulness and need to be either recycled or given to someone who can make use of them.  Do you really need all those clothes, cosmetic products, kitchen implements, books and trinkets? If not then why are you holding on to them?
  3. GET OUTSIDE
Fresh air and natural light stimulate the senses and are an important part in your mindfulness makeover. If you work in an office the chances are that you spend most of your time in a climate-controlled environment where the windows are sealed and the light is artificial. This makes it very easy to feel disconnected from nature. Think about how you view the outdoors from inside. Make the most of your outdoor time.
